His stories of life on the Canal were amazing. Too bad these stories are now fading with the old age deaths of so many heros. Thank you for documenting his history! |

He never spoke to his daughters about the war and all I heard was that he was in the first wave of Marines to land. I don't know where he fought and would like to ask if there is anyway I could find out about the locations or battles his regiment was involved in. If anyone has information please e-mail me. He passed away in 1990 and I wish he was here so I could thank him for his sacrifices. They truly were the greatest generation. | |||

Posted On: July 24, 2008 06:08:11 AM Name: Carol Carter Gilkison,RN,C. Email: cegilkison@sbcglobal.net Web Site: no Survey: Internet search Comments:: My dad, Thomas A. Carter,Jr.MM1C was a survivor of the USS HORNET CV-8. He passed away 11/18/1998. My greatest regret is that as a family we did not encourage him to write his memories of his time in history. As I get older I have a great need/desire to understand my daddy's war. The ghost of the HORNET has hung over me all my life. Daddy was 23 yrs.14 days old when the HORNET "died". He'd been aboard her from day one @ Norfolk,VA. He was in the engineering spaces playing Acey-Ducey with another sailor when the torpedos hit. When Doolittle took off for Tokyo, daddy was somewhere on or near the flight deck because I've heard him say many times how he watched those planes take off in spite of the rough seas. I don't think he was supposed to be on that deck at that time. Daddy never spoke of the traumas he sustained during wartime, but I now know he suffered from PTSD,only in those days there was no name for that distress. He returned from war, became employed, married, raised a family and built a life. I hope that the survivors or their families will get that metal promised them so long ago. Can't understand why it has been denied them for so long. God bless all of you who survived this historical event, and from me and mine, you have our heartfelt gratitude. |
