message: We have a strong brass band movement in our area I am enthusiastic about puttig on a concert with local misicians and a choir of a good standard made up of friends and acquaintances. I am very interested in Gabrieli and Monteverdi but am struggling with prograsmme content to be of interest to experienced singers . Do you have suggestions? Where do I get music? Would Paul be interested in conducting?

message: We heard Paul and Gabrieli singers with Martin Randall in 2008. I understand Paul organises the Wroclaw Festival. Is this happening this year and if so on what dates? Many thanks Michael Gifford

 message: Hello there,

allow me point out a few additions to the discography which might be of interest to fellow fans of the Gabrieli Consort and Maestro McCreesh.

This year the powers that be at DG decided to move most of the "Venetian" recordings to the bargain basement so to speak. Back in March a single disc selection was released for the German market under the title "Sacred music from Venice" on Universal's early music budget series Audior:
http://www.amazon.de/Geistliche-Musik-aus-Venedig-Audior/dp/B001495A7E/

And very recently the Dutch discount label Brilliant Classics managed to secure a licensing deal with DG allowing them to compile a 5CD box titled "Venetian Vespers" incl. all the music from the original DG/Archiv releases "Venetian Vespers", "Venetian Easter Mass" & "Music for San Rocco" (note: Venetian Easter Mass was apparently split over two cds for this re-release).
International release will be in January, though it seems to have already reached the shops in Germany and the Netherlands:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Venetian-Vespers/dp/B001LPNVDQ/
http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/classic/detail/-/hnum/3664742?rk=home&rsk=hitlist

Brilliant Classics also managed to license the Gabrieli Consort's debut recording of Carissimi Oratorios from Meridian:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Carissimi-Oratorios-Jephtha-Jonas-Solomon/dp/B001ACTNBO/

By the way, "Christmas round the world" as advertised on the the front page here, is nothing but a christmas themed compilation of various artists by Universal. The next proper release will be "A spotless rose". This was released by Universal in April 2008 for the national market in Poland, probably to coincide with the Wratislawa Cantans festival. The recording will see international release in February 2009 (or January in the UK, according to Amazon):
http://www.amazon.co.uk/A-Spotless-Rose/dp/B001F3ES9K/
http://www2.deutschegrammophon.com/special/?ID=mccreesh-spotlessrose

Next in line then will be a disc of Handel Arias which the Gabrieli Consort recorded this year in summer with Mexican tenor Rolando Villazon for DG/Archiv.

And last but not least, people planning to visit Spain around Easter might take note of the festival of religious music in Cuenca. The Gabrieli Consort will be performing on Easter Sunday (April 12th, 2009) in the Cathedral:

Enjoy & happy listening!

 message: Hello,

is the website still being maintained?

DGG has finally announced a release date for the Gabrieli Consort & Player's new recording of Haydn's Creation (January 2008):

http://www.deutschegrammophon.com/whatscoming/main.htms?ART_ID=XGACP

Time to update the website. ;o)

PS: Apparently the 'Christmas in Rome' recording has been reissued on DVD -- I'd hoped for a CD-rerelease myself but I guess you can't have everything.

 message: Andrew Fairbairn
It is with great regret that I have to advise Chorale that Andrew passed away peacefully on Saturday morning in the Leicester Royal Infirmary. Expressions of sympathy can be addressed to Hilary and Eddie, (Andrew’s daughter and son-in-law,) and their daughter Grace at 223 Forest Road, Old Woodhouse, Leics. LE128TZ.

Members will of course remember that Hilary, Ed and Grace have all attended various Chorale events and helped us in recent years.

The funeral is expected to be on the morning of Thursday 25th October at Old Woodhouse. As yet the arrangements are unknown but it is expected that there will be some music. We shall contact you with fuller details as soon as possible.

Please forward (I'm blessed if Nancy remembers the contexts!)
Happy 50, Nancy. A whole career away from room-inating and after-party milk running! I was a little astonished by the shared birthdate. 52 for me, but, thanks to GMT, you'll get there first. Very best wishes for many more years of successful musicking. Fondly, Jim Horne

message: Many thanks for an enthralling "Creation" last week. I'd been hankering to hear a performance of this nature 'live' ever since Christopher Hogwood's recording, using similar forces, of 1990. However, L'Oiseau-Lyre didn't capture their natural balance. The orchestra sounds smaller than it is, and the chorus sometimes overwhelms it. I trust that DG will capture the space and scale of your performance in the right perspective. One suggestion if I may. If it is at all possible at the recording venue, it might be advantageous to increase the cellos to 14 and the basses to 12 because the string bass line was a bit weak. That said, I was well aware that the Barbican platform could not have accommodated any more musicians. Best wishes.
